VIEW FROM THE CHEAP SEATS

ENOUGH OF THIS @#$% STUFF, GET ME OUT OF HERE

Well here I go again with an op-ed piece.  As I have said before, one of the advantages of being the Web Master for a site is the ability to have my views published for all to see.  Today's editorial is going to be a rambling around different things I have seen or heard in the past 6 month here in the Coastal Bend.  I am sure that you folks out there have seen the same things and have your own views regarding these things.

Let me start with visitation.  During the past 6 months, my Bride and I have visited each club (but one) in the area at least once and most of them three or more times and one of the clubs almost weekly.  We do this for several reasons one of which is we enjoy square dancing so we go every opportunity we get.  Another is we feel we should support the other clubs when possible.  We don't feel it necessary to "make a banner run" to extend support to the other clubs.  Just being there, enjoying the dancing, the neat folks, and perhaps completing a square is the type of support that is desperately needed here in the Coastal Bend.  I know that in my own club, trying to get a square together to make a banner run is an almost impossibly task (and discouraging) and what usually happens is when we can't get a square we usually just give up and don't go.  This is not the type of support Square Dancing in the Coastal Bend needs. Ok! enough on this subject.

One of the things I have repeatedly heard over the past six months is "things will improve when the winter Texans return".  Now while the "Winter Texans" are wonderful and dear friends that we cherish, they are like putting a bandaid on a rattle snake's bite.  All it does is cover the problem from October to April and not fix it.  The problem is the dwindling number of "local" dancers.  This is the problem folks and we just can't afford to put a bandaid on it.  We have got to fix it.  Shaking your head and saying "O'Woe is me" won't get the job done.  We have all got to think "out side the box" and start doing our bit to help fix the problem.

GO TO WEEK 2

In the future this will be a feature that will be added to each week.  You got a different view or want to just opine, go to the letter to the editor section.
